Rangers morning roundup

The Rangers busied themselves on several smaller fronts while missing out on reliever Koji Uehara, who has agreed to a one-year deal with Boston.

The day started the Rangers selecting Coty Woods from the Colorado organization in the major-league portion of the Rule 5 draft. Woods is a side-arming right-hander who had a strong Double A season and Arizona Fall League stint wrapped around a brief but poor Triple A showing. The Rangers will give Woods a chance to compete for a job in the 2013 bullpen.

The Rangers, though, lost first baseman Chris McGuiness to Cleveland in the Rule 5 draft. McGuiness was the Arizona Fall League MVP. Also gone is Tommy Mendonca, a former second-round pick who was selected by Oakland in the minor-league phase of the Rule 5 draft.

Also checked from the to-do list was finalizing last week's trade for Cory Burns. The Rangers sent right-hander Wilfredo Boscan to San Diego to finish the deal. Boscan is leading the Venezuela League in ERA this winter.

It was be remiss to not mention four minor-league signings with invitations to spring training. First baseman Brandon Allen and right-handers Jake Brigham, Randy Wells and Evan Meek all agreed to deals. Brigham is the only one without big-league experience, and Meek was an All-Star with Pittsburgh in 2010.

And, finally, there's this: Jon Daniels had not met the the media as of noon today, a sharp departure from previous winter meetings Thursdays. He usually gets the beat guys out of the way shortly after the Rule 5 draft. Maybe there's more work to be done before exiting the Gaylord Opryland.
