The Rangers made the signing of catcher A.J. Pierzynski official today, and designated catcher Luis Martinez for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.
Pierzynski, who turns 36 on Dec. 30, is a two-time All-Star who is coming off his best season last year with the White Sox. He batted .278 with career-highs in home runs (27), slugging percentage (.501), OPS (.827), runs (68), walks (28) and tied his career-high in RBIs (77).
Pierzynski and Geovany Soto are expected to be the catchers on Opening Day, and Pierzynski will also provide another left-handed bat in the lineup.
Martinez was acquired by the Rangers last off-season, and spent the majority of the season at Triple A Round Rock. He had two stints with the Rangers in 2012, playing in 10 games.
