Derek Lowe is the Rangers' long man

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Derek Lowe will be in the Texas Rangers' bullpen when the season opens on Sunday in Houston.

Manager Ron Washington said Lowe has made the team as a long reliever. The Rangers had to make a decision on Lowe today, as he had an out in his contract.

Lowe joins closer Joe Nathan, right-hander Jason Frasor and left-handers Michael Kirkman and Robbie Ross as known pieces in the bullpen, Washington said.

The final two spots are down to right-handers Josh Lindblom, Tanner Scheppers, Cory Burns and Coty Woods, as well as left-handers Nate Robertson and Joe Ortiz.

The Rangers could carry three of those six, though, at the beginning of the season as they won't need their fifth starter until April 9.

Washington said the team is still debating whether to carry an extra arm or position player the first 10 days.
