HOUSTON – Robinson Chirinos had a nightmarish travel day out of McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas on Friday. Two of his flights to Houston were canceled, and he wound up flying into DFW and landing at approximately 2 p.m.
Chirinos and a couple Texas Rangers staff members then made the approximately 260-mile drive from DFW to Houston, but made it before first pitch as they arrived at 6:15 p.m. at Minute Maid Park. Welcome back to the big leagues.
Geovany Soto is scheduled to get the bulk of the starts with A.J. Pierzynski (right oblique strain) landing on the disabled list, but Chirinos will get playing time.
Manager Ron Washington said he would use Chirinos with any of his pitchers except Yu Darvish and his vast array of pitches.
“It’s not his first time putting down fingers,” Washington said.
Chirinos, who played in 20 games with the Rays in 2011, hasn’t worked with any of the Rangers’ big-league pitchers as the team acquired him on April 7.-- Drew Davison
