ARLINGTON -- Ian Kinsler had discomfort while taking swings today, and the Texas Rangers went the precautious route by placing him in the disabled list and recalling top prospect Jurickson Profar.
Kinsler had been dealing with bruised ribs in his right side and officially landed on the DL with a right intercostal strain, retroactive to Saturday.
It's a significant loss for the Rangers, as Kinsler was batting .302 with seven home runs, 11 doubles, 20 RBIs and 24 runs from the leadoff spot. Elvis Andrus will assume leadoff duties, and David Murphy is expected to be the two-hole batter.
Profar, 20, is not starting today but is expected to be in the lineup on Monday. He has spent the season at Triple A Round Rock, batting .278 with 27 runs, seven doubles, two triples, four home runs and 19 RBIs. He had two homers for the Express on Saturday.
Profar reached the big leagues last season, memorably homering in his first at-bat in Cleveland. But he saw sparse action after that, batting .176 with a homer, two doubles and two RBIs in nine games. He appeared in the Wild Card game with a pinch-hit single in the ninth inning.
