Rangers designate Derek Lowe for assignment to clear spot for Josh Lindblom

The Texas Rangers designated veteran right-hander Derek Lowe for assignment on Monday afternoon, clearing a spot on the active roster for tonight's starter Josh Lindblom.

Lowe joined the Rangers midway through spring training on a minor-league deal, and pitched well enough to win the longman job in the bullpen. But he has a 9.00 ERA over nine appearances so far this season.

The Rangers will have to pay all of Lowe's $1.25 million salary. The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release or outright Lowe to the minor leagues.

The Rangers bullpen now consists of left-handers Michael Kirkman, Robbie Ross and Joseph Ortiz, as well as right-handers Cory Burns, Joe Nathan, Jason Frasor and Tanner Scheppers. Kirkman, Ortiz and Burns are the most likely longman candidates.
