Rangers set to purchase contract of LHP Neal Cotts contract; Nick Tepesch to be skipped

Neal Cotts is back in the big leagues for the first time since 2009.

The Rangers, assuming they play tonight, will purchase the contract of the 33-year-old left-handed reliever from Triple A Round Rock as the corresponding move to optioning Monday's starter Josh Lindblom back to Round Rock.

Cotts will give the Rangers a lefty a night after Joseph Ortiz and Michael Kirkman threw a substantial amount of pitches and were likely unavailable.

Cotts has been dominant so far with the Express. He has a 0.78 ERA over his first 15 appearances, including holding left-handed batters hitless with 22 strikeouts and three walks.

Cotts has spent the past two seasons in the Rangers organization. He joined the team prior to the 2012 season on a minor-league contract and almost made the Opening Day roster until he suffered a strained right lat late in spring training.

Cotts spent the year at Round Rock, posting a 4.55 ERA over 25 appearances, and re-signed with the organization last February on a minor-league deal with an invitation to big-league camp.

Cotts last pitched in the major leagues with the Chicago Cubs in 2009. He has played in parts of seven seasons with the Cubs (2007-09) and the White Sox (2003-06), compiling a 4.63 ERA 284 career appearances.

Here are a few other moves the Rangers announced:

* Right-hander Nick Tepesch won't make his scheduled start Wednesday as he has a blister on his right middle finger. Assuming the Rangers play tonight, they would then bring up right-hander Ross Wolf to make a spot start. Wolf, who has had two big-league stints with Miami and Oakland, has a 1.85 ERA over six starts with Round Rock.

* Finally, as expected, the Rangers announced that catcher A.J. Pierzynski has been activated from the disabled list with Robinson Chirinos being optioned back to Round Rock.
