Rangers GM Jon Daniels not expecting to acquire hitter or deal Joe Nathan

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said that nothing big is brewing two days before the July 31 trade deadline, and he doesn't expect a deal to add a right-handed hitter or ship away closer Joe Nathan to develop.

Daniels didn’t rule out a smaller deal, but the trade for right-hander Matt Garza, who was to start Monday, will rate as the Rangers’ big move ahead of the deadline this year.

That includes dealing Nathan, an idea that was floated but hasn’t had much traction.

"We'll talk about anything," Daniels said. "That's our jobs, but talking about something and having it happen are very different things.

"I don't expect to make any trades, but things have a way of changing. Our biggest acquisition we've made already. Beyond that, any other acquisition basically will be playing better."

The Rangers haven't had any recent talks with the White Sox for outfielder Alex Rios, and Giants outfielder Hunter Pence and Mariners designated hitter Kendrys Morales were also targets. There has never been much interest in a reunion with former Rangers Michael Young and Marlon Byrd.

A report surfaced late Saturday that the Rangers had talked about trading Nathan, who has 32 saves and has blown only two. His contract includes a $9 million club option, but he can become a free agent if he finishes 55 games this season and 100 in 2012 and 2013.
