Twins 4, Rangers 2 (F)

ARLINGTON -- The offense couldn't get anything going against Kevin Correia, Travis Blackley lasted only 4 1/3 innings and the Texas Rangers fell 4-2 to the Minnesota Twins on Sunday afternoon.

The Twins took two of three from the Rangers in the series. Texas has lost two of its past three series against the White Sox and Twins – teams that went into Sunday a combined 40 games under .500. But the Rangers have still won four of their last six and will open a three-game series against the A's in Oakland on Monday with at least a one-game lead in the American League West.

Blackley started off with four scoreless innings before running into some bad luck in the fifth inning.

Chris Colabello led off with a single, but Blackley appeared to induce a double-play grounder by Clete Thomas. An errant throw to first by Jurickson Profar, however, produced only one out and allowed Thomas to reach second.

Josmil Pinto then drove in Thomas with a double to left, and Pinto scored on an unconventional ground-rule double by Doug Bernier, who saw his pop up fall inside the right-field line and bounce into the stands.

Alex Presley followed with a soft liner to left that scored Bernier, and ended Blackley’s day after 81 pitches.

The Twins extended their lead to 4-1 in the eighth with a run charged to Joseph Ortiz. Presley scored on an infield single by Josh Willingham, as Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler tried to make a play but his throw to first was late and wide of the bag.

The Rangers’ offense couldn’t overcome that deficit.

Correia, who shut out the Rangers over eight innings in April, continued his dominance against them. The only run he allowed came on a solo homer by Mitch Moreland to start the third inning for a 1-0 lead.

The Rangers pulled to within 4-2 in the eighth when pinch-hitter A.J. Pierzynski had a one-out solo homer to right off Twins reliever Jared Burton. Martin then singled, but Profar and Kinsler grounded out to end the inning.
