Rangers to consider contract extension for Ron Washington

General manager Jon Daniels and manager Ron Washington met with the media late Thursday morning to rehash 2013 and look ahead to 2014. The biggest development is that the two will discuss a contract extension for the manager beyond next season.

Daniels doesn't want Washington to enter next season in the final year of his contract. Washington is the all-time winningest manager in club history, and Daniels gave a passionate defense of Washington to those who are critical of him.

"I think it's easy to sit back and pick it apart," Daniels said. "Wash has a hard job. It is a hard job. These decisions happen quick. He already said, 'Do we make mistakes? We all do.' He has a hard job, and I think he's pretty good at it."

Daniels said that he and Washington have yet to discuss an extension, and Daniels hasn't spoke with ownership or the baseball group about it. But he doesn't want any uncertainty about Washington's future entering next season.

"That would be my preference," Daniels said.
