Rangers re-sign C Geovany Soto

The Rangers have found their primary catcher for 2014, and they didn't have to look very hard to find him. Geovany Soto re-signed for another season with the Rangers on Tuesday on a one-year pact worth $3,050,000 plus incentives.

The former National League Rookie of the Year was acquired July 30, 2012, and spent 2013 with the Rangers after signing as a free agent in December. He served as the backup to A.J. Pierzynski and proved to be a clutch hitter.

Soto, who became a free agent last week, batted .245 in 54 games/163 at-bats, but nine of his 40 hits were home runs. He batted .440 (11 for 25) in September, with three of his nine homers and five of his 22 RBIs.

The Rangers continue to look for a catcher with Pierzynski a free agent. But before Pierzynski was signed last winter, the Rangers said they were confident going with Soto as the primary catcher.

One of the top free agents on the market this off-season is catcher Brian McCann, who is expected to receive a big contract.
