Jon Daniels doesn't expect to re-sign Nelson Cruz

The Nelson Cruz era with the Texas Rangers appears to be over.

Last Saturday when the Rangers agreed to terms on a seven-year, $130 million contract with free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, general manager Jon Daniels reached out to Cruz and thanked him for what he did for the team and the community.

And now Choo has Cruz's old jersey number, 17.

"I'm not going to 100 percent close any doors, but I think realistically his best opportunity may be elsewhere," Daniels said. "I'm expecting him to sign elsewhere, but we genuinely care about the guy and appreciate what he's done here."

The Rangers will receive draft-pick compensation if Cruz signs elsewhere. Cruz turned down the qualifying offer the Rangers made to him early in the off-season.

Cruz has spent the past eight seasons with the Rangers, and became one of the threats in the middle of the lineup. He made the American League All-Star team in 2009 and 2013, and was named the ALCS MVP in 2011.

Last year, Cruz accepted a 50-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs in the Biogenesis of America scandal.
