Johnson Wagner, an Amarillo native who won the 2008 Houston Open, is in control of the leaderboard at today's opening round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
Wagner finished with a 7-under par 63, which included nine birdies and two bogeys. He stands three stokes ahead of his closest pursers, Glen Day and Roanoke resident Tag Ridings. Day has completed his round. Ridings is 4-under through 11 holes as of 3 p.m.
Fort Worth resident Mark Brooks is among a group of golfers who have completed play at 3-under.
Phil Mickelson, the No. 2 player in the world golf rankings, is 2-under through nine holes. Most of the other members of Colonial's "Fab Five" have struggled: Jim Furyk (1-over), K.J. Choi (3-over) and Steve Stricker (4-over) have completed their rounds. Geoff Ogilvy is 1-over through nine holes.
