J.P. Hayes, the golfer who disqualified himself at the 2008 PGA Tour qualifying tournament for using a non-conforming ball during competition, has accepted a sponsor’s exemption to play in the HP Byron Nelson Championship, May 21-24 in Irving.
Tournament officials announced the exemption today, making Hayes one of the earliest commitments for the 2009 Nelson field. Hayes, 43, is an El Paso resident who has two career victories at PGA Tour events: the 2002 John Deere Classic and the 1998 Buick Classic.
In December, Hayes committed to play in the 2009 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, May 28-31 in Fort Worth.
