The 2009 HP Byron Nelson Championship raised $4.4 million for local charities, tournament officials announced today.
Because of a sluggish economy, the figure for the May event in Irving was down from the 2008 total ($6.1 million) and marked the tournament’s smallest donation since $4.3 million in 1998.
But the 2009 figure boosted the Nelson’s total charitable donations to more than $112 million since 1973, tops among PGA Tour events.
In a prepared statement, 2009 Nelson tournament chairman Charley Spradley said he was “proud of what we were able to accomplish in the face of the worst economy in two generations.”
