Early Round 3 movers, shakers...

Some guys are taking advantage of their early starts out here, including Jerry Kelly. He started at 3-under for the first two days, but is now 5-under through the first eight holes to move to 8-under for the tournament.

Kelly's heroics include three birdies and an eagle on No. 2, where he holed out from a sand trap 52 feet away.

Course record watch, perhaps?

Bryce Molder atop leaderboard

The morning guys continue to get a jump on this course, and Bryce Molder took advantage of it more than anyone today. Molder shot a 62 today, tied for the second-best course record out here (he's one of six who have done that now) and moved to the lead with 13-under for the tournament. It was also Molder's personal best outing.

Molder pulled a putt on No. 18, which would've tied him for the course record if he had sunk it. Molder said it was in his thoughts a bit.

"I would love to say I didn't think about it," he said. "But I pretty well knew, or I thought that 61 was the course record. I knew I would be tied with at least a couple of people if I did it. I thought I was going to make it, but I actually had a poor putt."

Pavin ready for the weekend

Corey Pavin, who began his second round 3-under, surged to 9-under and is currently tied for fourth at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. Pavin said last week at the Byron Nelson that he was looking to coming over to this side of the Metroplex because he's always done well here. Indeed, the 50-year-old won the Colonial titles in 1985 and 1996. He's also finished tied for 18th or better the last two tournaments and has missed the cut just three times in 27 appearances here.

Yeah, no wonder he was ready to get over here.

Mickelson says goodbye

Yes, folks, I'm sad to say it's true: Phil Mickelson, who won the 2008 Invitational, will not make the cut today. Mickelson was 4-over for the tournament, and the cut is likely going to be 1-under. It was a quick event for Mickelson, whose wife's battle with breast cancer will still be recognized tomorrow with Pink Out Day.

"I played terrible. I don't know what to say," Mickelson said aftereward. "I thought the golf course was in great shape. I played terrible, but the changes were fabulous. I didn't get a chance to see the changes last year.  They took terrific and there is no wind. There was a ton of birdies out there, and I didn't make have many of them. I just played terrible. There is no other way to say it."

Daly in at 5-under

John Daly was looking at 7-under or better heading into No. 9, his final hole on Friday. But he ran into some trouble there. His second shot hit a tree and went into the water in front of the green; a drop and a two-putt later, and Daly finished at 5-under. Still not bad, considering he's never done very well out here.

Daly had quite a following today on the course, and don't expect that to lessen this weekend.

Scores getting low

The continued dry and windless conditions mean the scores keep getting lower here at Colonial.

Brian Davis is currently at 10-under, as is Bryce Molder. Carl Pettersson, meanwhile, is 9-under.

It's already steamy out here folks, and I'd think the early guys have an advantage. I'd hate to be getting through an afternoon round today.

Daly in at 4-under

This course has never been kind to John Daly but he had a great first round today. Daly had about an 8-foot birdie putt that he missed to the right, but he finished it for par to finish 4-under for the day. Guy's a great feel-good story, so nice to see him doing well out here.

Added note: That was Daly's first bogey-free round since the 2008 Bob Hope Classic, which was 83 rounds ago for him.

Davis comes in at 6-under

Just watched Brian Davis sink a short par putt to finish 6-under for the day, one shot back of co-leaders Bohn and Overton.

Daly at 3-under

Not-so-big-anymore John Daly is holding his own out here at the Crowne Plaza. He just teed off No. 15 and he's 3-under as he's close to wrapping up his first round here.

Not surprisingly, Daly, decked out in blue and white checkered pants today, has a pretty decent-sized gallery following him.

J.J. Henry 4-under at the turn

It was almost a move to 5-under for TCU product J.J. Henry, whose long birdie attempt at No. 9 just hung on the bottom lip of the hole. He gave it a second or two to fall -- but on a windless day there was no chance -- before he tapped it in for par.

Some of the leaders have really been making their charge on the back nine. We'll see if it's as successful for Henry.
