Bob Estes, a longtime PGA Tour competitor from Austin, landed a berth in next week’s U.S. Open by earning medalist honors today at a 36-hole sectional qualifier in The Woodlands.
Estes, winner of four tour events during his professional career, posted rounds of 69-67 to finish at 8-under par at The Club at Carlton Woods. Robert Gates (7-under) outlasted Roland Thatcher in a playoff to earn the other available spot in the field at the U.S. Open, June 17-20 in Pebble Beach, Calif. The qualifier concluded Tuesday because of two Monday weather delays.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, one of the participants in the qualifier, withdrew Monday night when the second weather delay was called so he could take part in Tuesday’s organized team activities at Valley Ranch.
