J.J. Henry, a Fort Worth resident and former TCU golfer, appears to be in good shape to qualify for next week’s U.S. Open based on the early returns from today’s 36-hole sectional qualifier in suburban Memphis.
Henry, a PGA Tour competitor, put together rounds of 69-66 to reach 7-under par. Henry stands in second place, three strokes behind leader Hudson Swafford (10-under), with more than half the field still completing their second rounds. The Memphis qualifier will send 12 golfers to next week’s U.S. Open, June 17-20 in Pebble Beach, Calif.
Henry is the lone Tarrant County golfer at the qualifier who had completed 36 holes by 6 p.m. today. Other golfers with local connections who broke par in today’s opening round included three Colleyville residents: Chad Campbell (67), Ryan Palmer (67) and Greg Chalmers (68), along with Dallas resident Martin Flores (69), a former Mansfield High golfer. All three are still completing their second rounds.
