Officials at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial raised $4.1 million for local charities as part of the 2010 event’s Birdies For Charity campaign, tournament officials announced today.
During the PGA Tour’s stop in Fort Worth in May, golfers collected 1,517 birdies to boost the donation total. The $4.1 million total makes up a significant percentage, but not the entire amount, of Colonial’s total donations to local non-profit organizations. The total figure will be announced in December.
Peter Ripa, Colonial tournament director, has said the 2010 donation total will exceed last year’s $5.1 million and could approach $6 million. Colonial’s tournament-record total for charitable giving was $6.6 million in 2008, followed by $5.1 million in 2009.
Chuck Scherer, Colonial tournament chairman, said it was “incredibly gratifying to see the community support” for the event’s Birdies for Charity campaign during difficult economic times.
