PGA Tour officials released their 2011 schedule today, with 41 weekly events involved in the chase for the season-ending FedEx Cup and several date changes for Texas-based tournaments.
Among the fresh tweaks for 2011 will include reversing the traditional playing order of the Dallas-Fort Worth events in May _ a move announced locally in September _ and the bracketing of the Masters Tournament in April with stops in Houston and San Antonio.
For the first time, professional golfers will compete in Fort Worth at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial (May 16-22) one week before playing in Irving at the HP Byron Nelson Championship (May 23-29). Traditionally, the Nelson has preceded the Colonial in years when the events have been scheduled in consecutive weeks.
The remaining Texas tour stops will be played in close proximity to the Masters. The Shell Houston Open (March 28-April 3) will precede the season’s first major championship in Augusta, Ga. (April 4-10). The Valero Texas Open (April 11-17) will follow the Masters.
Another move is switching the off week during the FedEx Cup playoffs to allow the season’s final two events to be contested in consecutive weeks: the BMW Championship (Sept. 12-18) and the Tour Championship (Sept. 19-25). The 2010 schedule provided an off week between the final two events.
In addition, the Viking Classic in Madison, Miss. moves to the regular season stretch of the schedule and will be played during the same week as the British Open (July 11-17). The event was part of the 2010 Fall Series.
In addition to the Masters (April 4-10), dates for golf’s other major championships include: U.S. Open (June 13-19), British Open (July 11-17) and PGA Championship (Aug. 8-14).
