Jordan Spieth, the Dallas teenager who tied for 16th place and became a gallery favorite at last year’s HP Byron Nelson Championship, will return for an encore performance this year. Tournament officials announced today that Spieth, 17, has accepted a sponsor’s exemption to compete in their PGA Tour event, May 23-29 in Irving.
Spieth, a senior at Dallas Jesuit High School, posted the highest finish by any amateur in the Nelson’s 43-year history in 2010. Spieth, who plans to play college golf at Texas, is ranked No. 2 in the Polo Golf Rankings for amateur golfers.
John Beckert, Nelson tournament chairman, said officials opted to bring back Spieth because, “Jordan added a great energy to the tournament last year. And he certainly proved that he could compete at this level. I’m sure everyone will be interested to see how he follows that up on the course this year.”
