Here's a crazy statistic from the professional golf world. Heading into this week's events, Tom Lehman technically leads both the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour in the greens in regulation category.
Lehman, who competes primarily on the Champions Tour, will be among the favorites when the 50-and-over circuit tee it up in Friday's opening round at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Resort Classic in Biloxi, Miss. Lehman has hit 85.8 percent of his greens in regulation in three tour stops this season (nine total rounds). That has him ranked No. 1 in the GIR category on the Champions Tour, where he has one victory and leads the tour in earnings ($478,308).
If he had more rounds under his belt at PGA Tour stops, Lehman also would lead the GIR category on that circuit as well. He has played two events (8 total rounds) and found the greens in regulation at an 80.56 clip in those tournaments. But he does not have enough rounds played in PGA Tour stops to qualify among this week's official statistical leaders.
So the top spot belongs to Westlake resident Ben Crane, at 74.54 percent. Crane has played in 15 rounds at PGA Tour events this season heading into Thursday's opening round at the Shell Houston Open.
