Tiger Woods will miss next week’s Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, N.C. because of a minor injury, Woods announced today on his website. Woods said he contacted tournament officials and “expressed my regret” at having to miss the May 5-8 event.
The site said Woods suffered a Grade 1 sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and a mild strain to his left Achilles tendon while hitting a shot from pine straw to the left of the 17th hole during the third round of the Masters Tournament, April 9 in Augusta, Ga. Woods did not indicate when he plans to return to competition on the PGA Tour, saying he hopes “to be back in a few weeks.”
If the injury lingers, Woods could miss The Players Championship, May 12-15 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Woods is not on the commitment list for either of the Dallas-Fort Worth tour stops, the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in Fort Worth (May 16-22) or the HP Byron Nelson Championship in Irving (May 23-29).
