Kudos to Fox Sports Southwest broadcaster Ric Renner for posting an ace during today’s Colonial Wide Open media tournament. Renner aced the 16th hole using a 7-iron. I’ve probably played in 20 to 25 of these events and it was the first time I can recall a fellow media member acing a par-3 at Colonial.
Even better: Renner did it on the day when officials at Crowne Plaza – title sponsor of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial – chose to launch their “Room Nights for the Brave” program, which provides hotel rooms to support injured veterans and military personnel participating in the “Birdies for the Brave” charity initiative at PGA Tour events.
Beginning with the first round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial (May 19) and running through the final round of the AT&T National (July 3), Crowne Plaza officials will donate a room night to a military family for every eagle recorded by a PGA Tour player during that stretch. Before the start of today’s media event, Crowne Plaza officials also extended the program to include today’s Wide Open.
Renner’s ace was one of five eagles recorded during the event, getting the “Room Nights for the Brave” initiative off to a solid start.
