Adam Scott, the No. 18 player in the world golf rankings and a runner-up at last month’s Masters Tournament, added his name to the commitment list today for the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, May 16-22 in Fort Worth.
It will mark the second Colonial appearance for Scott, who finished in a tie for 64th at the 2009 event in his Fort Worth debut. Scott’s return to Colonial offers a unique opportunity for the 30-year-old Australian, who already has won titles at Texas’ other three annual stops on the PGA Tour: the HP Byron Nelson Championship (2008), Shell Houston Open (2007) and Valero Texas Open (2010).
With a victory at Colonial, Scott would become the first golfer to win all four Texas-based tour events in his career. Colonial tournament director Peter Ripa said Scott mentioned the potential historical significance of this year’s appearance when making his commitment.
“He told me, ‘I’d like to add one more in Texas, so I’m excited about that,’” Ripa said. “He knows what’s at stake. It would be awesome to see him make a run at it.”
Scott, who tied for second at the 2011 Masters with Fort Worth resident Jason Day, joined the Colonial field on the same day that Austin resident Ben Crenshaw, a two-time champion, took his name off the commitment list. Crenshaw’s daughter, Katherine, and brother, Charlie, are graduating from the University of Texas on Friday night of Colonial week and Crenshaw plans to attend the ceremony in Austin.
Ripa said Crenshaw, 59, remains the featured speaker at the Ben Hogan Award banquet, scheduled Monday of tournament week, and plans to attend the Colonial champion’s dinner on Wednesday before returning to Austin for the graduation. Ripa said Colonial officials “understand his decision, 100 percent” about taking his name out of the mix as a competitor.
Other recent additions to the Colonial field include Chris Couch, Colt Knost, Billy Mayfair, Nick O’Hern, Rod Pampling, Michael Sim and Mike Weir, the 2003 Masters champion.
