A total of 71 golfers, including several PGA Tour competitors and notable amateurs with Tarrant County connections, will try and play their way into the field at the 2011 U.S. Open during Monday’s 36-hole sectional qualifier at Dallas Athletic Club.
The qualifiers will earn berths in the field for the U.S. Open, June 16-19 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.
Among the entrants are touring pros Justin Leonard, Tom Kite, Todd Hamilton, Harrison Frazar and Greg Chalmers. The field also includes Franklin Corpening, a Fort Worth resident and former TCU golfer who competes on the 2011 Adams Golf Pro Tour Series.
LSU golfer John Peterson, a Fort Worth Paschal graduate who won the 2011 NCAA individual title Thursday in Stillwater, Okla. is one of several notable amateurs vying for an Open berth. The list includes Dallas teen Jordan Spieth, a Texas signee who has made the cut the past two years at the HP Byron Nelson Championship.
