Oosthuizen joins 2012 Nelson field

Louis Oosthuizen, the No. 11 player in the world golf rankings, has committed to play in the HP Byron Nelson Championship, May 14-20 in Irving. It will mark the Nelson debut for Oosthuizen, a native of South Africa who won the 2010 British Open and finished as the runner-up last month at the 2012 Masters.

Registration begins May 1 for golfers to compete in FWJGA city championships

Registration opens Tuesday, May 1 for golfers interested in competing in the Fort Worth Junior Golf Association’s 2012 city championship events. The girls’ tournament will be July 9-11. The boys’ tournament is July 16-19. For registration information, visit www.fwjga.net.

Monday deadline looms for 2012 Texas Golf Hall of Fame nominations

Monday (April 30) is the deadline for golf fans to nominate candidates to be considered for inclusion in the Texas Golf Hall of Fame’s 2012 induction class. Oosthuizen, Garcia add star power to Colonial field

Louis Oosthuizen, the No. 11 player in the world golf rankings and winner of the 2010 British Open, joined Sergio Garcia among today’s high-profile commitments to the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Garcia, the 2001 Colonial champ, is No. 21 in the latest world rankings. The addition of both players means the Colonial field will feature three of the top 15 golfers in the world rankings _ as well as 10 of the top 30 _ for the May 21-27 event, based on current commitments.

Bill Haas, the No. 19 player in the world rankings and winner of the 2011 FedEx Cup, added his name to the Colonial commitment list earlier this week, along with Brian Gay.

Oosthuizen, 29, will be making his Colonial debut. A native of South Africa, Oosthuizen narrowly missed claiming his second major title earlier this month when he lost to Bubba Watson in a playoff at the Masters. Oosthuizen ranks 16th on the PGA Tour’s season money list ($1,462,839), with four top 25 finishes in six events. A nine-time winner of international events, Oosthuizen also finished third at the Shell Houston Open.

Garcia, 32, finished 12th at the Masters. He has made the cut in all six tour events he has entered this season and ranks 57th on the money list with $622,825. His best finish this season was a tie for fourth at the Northern Trust Open.

Scott joins 2012 Nelson field

Adam Scott, the No. 12 player in the world golf rankings, committed today to play in the HP Byron Nelson Championship, May 14-20 in Irving. Scott, the 2008 Nelson champ, finished eighth at the Masters in his most recent start in a PGA Tour event.

Harrington, Els, Day to compete at 2012 Nelson

Padraig Harrington, a three-time major champion, has joined Ernie Els and Jason Day among golfers who will compete at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, May 14-20 in Irving.

Harrington, a two-time British Open champ (2007, 2008) who also won the 2008 PGA, will be making his first appearance at the Nelson. Els and Day are past Nelson champions. Other notable additions to the commitment list announced today include Ben Curtis, Sunday’s winner of the Valero Texas Open, and Jason Dufner, the No. 30 player in the world golf rankings.

Sabbatini, Pavin, Ogilvy, Chalmers join 2012 Colonial field

A pair of past Colonial champions, Fort Worth resident Rory Sabbatini and two-time winner Corey Pavin, join 2006 U.S. Open champ Geoff Ogilvy and Colleyville resident Greg Chalmers among the latest wave of golfers who have committed to compete in the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, May 21-27 in Fort Worth.

Tournament officials announced 11 fresh additions to the field today. The list includes Matt Every, Sunday’s runner-up at the Valero Texas Open, as well as Jason Dufner, the No. 30 player in the world golf rankings. Other recent additions include Sean O’Hair, Harris English, Tom Gillis, Michael Thompson and Peter Uihlein, winner of the 2011 Ben Hogan Award and a rookie 2012 European Tour.

With the latest wave of commitments, Colonial has eight of the top 30 players in the world rankings _ headed by No. 5 Hunter Mahan, a Colleyville resident _ as well as five of the top nine players from the season money list. Mahan, who ranks second on the money list ($3,094,040), is the only two-event winner on the 2012 PGA Tour.

Texas golfer Frittelli named co-winner of 2012 Byron Nelson Award

Texas golfer Dylan Frittelli and Georgia Tech’s James White have been selected as co-recipients of the 2012 Byron Nelson Award, given to a graduating senior who excels on and off the course in college golf. Officials announced the honorees today. Frittelli, a two-time All-American, has three tournament victories in his college career and also is a semifinalist for the 2012 Ben Hogan Award, given to the nation’s top college golfer.
