Erik Compton and Billy Hurley III have been selected as Champions Choice participants in the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, May 21-27 in Fort Worth.
Both golfers will be making their Colonial debuts and will receive sponsor’s exemptions into the field based on ballots cast by past tournament champions asked to identify promising PGA Tour newcomers with no previous appearances in Fort Worth. Tournament officials announced the balloting results today.
Compton, 32, finished 13th on the Nationwide Tour money list last season and has cracked the top 30 in two PGA Tour stops this season. A college golfer at Georgia, Compton is best known to golf fans for having undergone two heart transplants, one in 1992 and the other in 2008.
Hurley, 29, finished 25th on last year’s Nationwide Tour money list to become a PGA Tour rookie this season. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Hurley spent 2004-09 on active duty, including a stint on a destroyer in the Persian Gulf. Hurley tied for 32nd last month at the Valero Texas Open, marking his best finish of the season in a PGA Tour event.
