Jason Dufner, last week’s winner at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, is making significant strides toward his own North Texas Two-Step through the D-FW stops on the PGA Tour.
Dufner fired a bogey-free 64 in today’s morning round at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, moving to 11-under-par and into the solo lead at Fort Worth’s annual tour stop. Dufner buried six birdie putts, all from 20 feet or less, during his round and has placed himself in position to become the first golfer in history to win Nelson and Colonial titles in consecutive weeks.
Ben Hogan, the late golf legend from Fort Worth, won 1946 titles at the Dallas Invitational (later renamed the Nelson) and at the inaugural Colonial tournament. But the events were not played in consecutive weeks. Hogan won the 1946 Colonial title in May and the 1946 Dallas title in September.
Dufner, who has held a lead in 11 of his last 34 rounds at PGA Tour events, said he welcomes the chance to make history by being the first to complete the Nelson-Colonial title trek in consecutive weeks.
“That would be a neat thing … a great thing,” Dufner said after today’s round. “I’m playing some good golf. I’d be happy to make a little history.”
Zach Johnson, the Colonial first round leader, began his round at 12:18 p.m. and posted an eagle, followed by a birdie, to climb to 9-under, two strokes behind Dufner, during the early stages of his second round. Johnson, the 2010 Colonial champ, posted a 64 in Thursday’s opening round.
Dufner will throw out the first pitch before tonight’s Rangers-Toronto Blue Jays game at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington (7:05 p.m.).
