Southlake resident Hunter Haas, who ranks 145th on the PGA Tour’s season money list ($399,364), will have season-ending hip surgery, Haas announced today on his Twitter account.
Haas, 35, posted that he will be “out till next year” because of the surgery.
In a phone interview, Haas said an MRI revealed a torn labrum and cartilage damage in the hip. He considered taking a cortisone shot and attempting to finish the season but opted instead for the surgery.
Haas, 35, will begin the 2013 season playing on a major medical exemption.
“I need to get this done and get myself ready for next year,” said Haas, a Fort Worth native who played college golf at Oklahoma. “It’s going to take three or for months (to rehabilitate). So I didn’t want to put next season in the balance by missing time then.”
Haas made the cut in 12 of 24 events during the 2012 season, including a tie for eighth at the Valero Texas Open in April. Haas made the cut at both Dallas-Fort Worth tour stops, finishing in a tie for 56th at the HP Byron Nelson Championship and a tie for 73rd at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
Haas’ final event of the 2012 season was the Reno-Tahoe Open, where he finished in a tie for 31st on Aug. 5.
