AT&T will become the title sponsor of the Byron Nelson tournament in 2015, based on a two-year deal announced today by tournament and PGA Tour officials.
The deal runs through the 2016 event in Irving, although AT&T officials have expressed interest in a long-term relationship. Financial terms were not announced.
AT&T will replace HP, the tournament’s title sponsor since 2009, when the existing deal expires after the 2014 event. HP became the title sponsor when it acquired EDS, the Nelson’s title sponsor from 2003-2008.
Ron Spears, AT&T senior executive vice-president, said in a statement that executives with the Dallas-based corporation are excited to support the Nelson and “hope the tournament will be the AT&T Byron Nelson Championship for many years into the future.”
The company also is title sponsor of the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, played each January at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
Charley Spradley, president of the Salesmanship Club that oversees the Nelson tournament, said extending the title sponsorship agreement through 2016 helps secure the event’s future and represents “proof of the commitment they (AT&T officals) have made to our community.”
