Matt Kuchar secured the official second-round lead at the midpoint of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial this morning with three pars in his suspended second round.
Kuchar, the No. 13 player in the world golf rankings and top-rated player in the Colonial field, is at 10-under-par for the tournament heading into today’s third round, which is expected to begin at approximately 10:30 a.m. Players completed second-round play at 9:09 a.m.
The 78 Colonial cut survivors (1-under, 139 total) will compete in threesomes during the third round, with groups going off the first and 10th tees. Kuchar’s group is expected to begin at approximately 12:30 p.m off the first tee. Third-round groups have yet to be announced but one of his playing partners will be Graham DeLaet (9-under), the only golfer within a stroke of Kuchar heading into the third round.
For Kuchar, this will mark the sixth time in his PGA Tour career that he has held a 36-hole lead. The last time he did so, he went on to win The Players Championship in 2012.
Ryan Palmer, a Colleyville resident and the first-round Colonial leader, gave back two strokes to par this morning in the final six holes of his suspended second round. Palmer stands at 6-under heading into the third round.
Notable players who missed the Colonial cut by a single stroke, with two-day totals of 140, included Colleyville resident Chad Campbell, 2011 Masters champ Charles Schwartzel, Westlake resident Ben Crane, reigning U.S. Amateur champ Steven Fox and three past Colonial champs: Corey Pavin, Tom Lehman and Rory Sabbatini.
Also missing the weekend rounds will be Ricky Barnes, Justin Leonard, Vijay Singh, Trevor Immelman, Sean O’Hair and Davis Love III.
