Not sure if Doug Free is going to be a Cowboy next season, but let's expect that he is. The Cowboys drafting of USC monster Tyron Smith with the No. 9 overall pick means Free is no longer a left tackle. Which means Marc Colombo's days are numbered.
Free easily exceeded any and all expectations last season when he took over for Flozell Adams last season. He was the lone young guy on the line. The Cowboys are not taking Smith this high in the draft to be a right tackle. If they took Smith to develop him they're dumber than we think ... which is possible.
Don't be sad that Colombo has to go. It was time. There are other guys on that line that need to go, too.
Other than Tony Romo, finding and rebuilding Colombo off the waiver wire pile may have been Bill Parcells' greatest single player find. Colombo was trashed because of knee injuries when he arrived in Dallas, and with patience and a lot of work he developed into a nasty right tackle who could really fight. The Cowboys will miss his temperament.
