This story is troubling but not exactly a massive surprise: Former Texas Rangers OF Carl Everett was arrested for putting a gun to his wife's head.
I was talking to Rangers pitcher Darren Oliver last night about his stay with the Rangers after '01 when he reminded me that it was he who was dealt to Boston for Everett. We hadn't even seen this story yet; it just came up in conversation. Former Rangers GM John Hart wasn't a big fan of Oliver, and Hart hearted him some big bats. And he also loved players who had a penchant for saying or doing the wrong thing. All the time.
Who thought Oliver would still be in the bigs this many years later while Everett would be doing a very wrong thing, at least according to this police report?
Everett was a bizarre character. I distinctly recall him telling me once that a reporter should just take quotes from a player and not write anything else. It was the writer's words that always screwed everything up. Maybe he was right.
