Texas Coach Rick Barnes is Dale Brown

356359_display_image LSU basketball coach Dale Brown once had Chris Jackson, Shaquille O'Neal and Stanley Roberts on the same team and did nothing with them. It remains one of the greatest coaching feats in basketball history.

So Texas fans need not complain that 2011 NBA draft picks Tristan Thompson and Jordan Hamilton didn't get to the Sweet 16. It's not like either of these two guys is Shaq.

This S-T piece by Mike Jones delves deep into this UT hoops issue of NBA talent and little NCAA success.

Barnes has no problem luring NBA talent to Austin - Chris Mihm, T.J. Ford, Kevin Durant, D.J. Augustin, LaMarcus Aldridge and on and on.

Like Brown, Barnes gets big-time talent with maddening results. Like Brown, Barnes at a football-first school where basketball success is regarded as gravy. If they win, wonderful. If they don't, when is football season?

95660280-1.jpg.25469_crop_340x234 Barnes isn't a bad coach. He's not a great coach. He is, however, a great recruiter. And great recruiters usually have a much better chance at long-term success than just being a great coach.

Unless you're Dale Brown.

Your analogy is a stretch, but I like where your head is at. Dale Brown was an abysmal head coach. Dale Brown had a TON of talent; NBA talent... NBA hall of fame talent... and his teams were nothing more than full of promise.

Where I hope the comparisons end is where how much Dale Brown and his alum paid players to come to LSU. Its no secret here in the bayou that Brown got his players cars, cars, and whatever else they required.

Dale Brown was as crooked as they come. And he wasn't a great coach. But his kids loved him and they were loyal to him. It is amazing he amassed as much talent as he did. Some of his teams were stacked. Hard for me to believe he didn't win more than he did.

Before Dale Brown arrived in Baton Rouge, only Bob Pettit and Pete Maravich had ever given fans reason to follow basketball. Brown took LSU to two Final Fours and beat mighty Kentucky more than any other SEC coach during his time there.
NCAA never found Brown guilty of anything during his time there. The school did get slap on wrist because a booster paid Lester Earl $5000. Booster was banned and Kansas accepted transfer Earl with open arms.

LSU Tiger

Dale Brown was colorful and a great recruiter. I love how much his kids loved him though. They were loyal. Cash and cars will get you great players, but a players loyalty is a more fickle thing.I loved coach Brown, but it's a mystery to me why he didnt win more. He wasNT an 'x' & 'o's legend but he was decent. LSU would be lucky to have somebody as beloved and as talented of a recruiter as coach Brown.

Mike

In fairness brown only had jackson, shaq and roberts together for one season. Georgia tech beat that lsu team in ncaa tourney and had just as many future nba players as that lsu team if not more. Kenny anderson, d scott, b oliver. I remember dale brown beating those tom penders teams even when texas & penders had more talent like the superdome game shaq's junior season when all lsu had that year was shaq and texas was loaded.
