IRVING - Let's see, by my math Tyron Smith should be the starting left tackle for the Dallas Cowboys ... roughly 15 minutes after the win against the Redskins. He is as raw as fresh chicken, but his upside is considerably higher than that of current Cowboys' left tackle Doug Free. To wait until next season to make this switch seems like a waste.
It is time to move Smith to the left side and switch Doug Free back to the right.
Coming out of Northern Illinois, Free was moved from the left side to the right side during his rookie year. He played some on the left behind Flozell Adams, but he really made his mark when he started to spot Marc Colombo on the other side. As a left tackle last season, Free was the team's best OL in 2010.
But ... at this moment, the Cowboys best offensive lineman is a 21-year-old rookie. Granted, Smith is easily the most athletic of talented of the bunch, and a physical wonder, but he is a natural left tackle. Plus you just don't spend the No. 9 overall pick in the NFL draft on a right tackle. You spend the No. 9 overall pick in the NFL draft on your left tackle for the next 8 to 10 years.
"You basically just switch it up, in terms of terminology," Smith TOLD ME.
When I asked him if he could go back to the left side fairly quickly, he said, "Oh, yeah. Just have to work on a little bit."
Three games into the regular season, the Cowboys are not going to make this move unless they absolutely have to. It will happen in the offseason, but they may as well do it now.
