LaDainian Tomlinson's retirement brings to mind the 2000 Heisman Trophy race.
No one at TCU actually thought L.T. was going to win, primarily because he was playing in an obscure conference against garbage competition. It did not prevent the school from starting an ad campaign that cost well into the six figures. The reward was going to be his invitation to New York City for the award ceremony.
He made it.
On the day he retired, it's fun to review how the 2000 Heisman Trophy voting went:
1. Chris Weinke, QB, Florida State, 1,628 votes
2. Josh Heupel, QB, Oklahoma, 1,552 votes
3. Drew Brees, QB, Purdue, 619 votes
4. LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, TCU, 566 votes
5. Damien Anderson, RB, Northwestern, 101 votes
6. Michael Vick, QB, Va Tech, 83 votes
7. Santana Moss, WR, Miami, 55 votes
8. Marques Tuiasosopo, QB, Washington, 41 votes
9. Ken Simonton, RB, Oregon State, 25 votes
10. Rudi Johnson, RB, Auburn, 20 votes
I realize the award is for the Best College Player, and that during the 2000 season Weinke may have been just that. But, really?

Great article. Interesting. Thats actually a pretty good Heisman class. 3 or 4 of those guys turned out to be studs in the NFL. I have to be honest. I would have never have guessed LT would go on to do some of the amazing things he did as a Pro. He was a special back in college, and amazing in the NFL. Hats off to LT.
