The Texas Rangers' acquisition of Chicago Cubs' right handed pitcher Ryan Dempster for a couple of low level minor leaguers may be a good deal, but it completes one of the more unique career arcs as it brings Dempster "home".
Dempster was actually selected by the Texas Rangers in the third round of the 1995 MLB amateur draft. Dempster, of course, never saw any time with the Rangers.
This is a shot of Dempster being wisely photographed with SI/Victoria's Secret model Marissa Miller.
He was dealt by the team on Aug. 8, 1996 to the Florida Marlins with a player to be named later for pitcher John Burkett.
That player to be named later was pitcher Rick Helling, who was shipped to the Marlins on Sept. 3, 1996. On Aug. 12, 1997 the Rangers sent pitcher Ed Vosberg to the Marlins to re-acquire Rick Helling.
Both Burkett and Helling became key pitchers to the Rangers' division title teams in 1998 and 1999.
Now Dempster comes back, and if all goes well will be a key pitcher for the Rangers first World Series winner.
