What was initially regarded by some as a joke or a punchline is obviously a very serious matter. The Texas Rangers and TV play by play man Dave Barnett have announced that he will not be returning to the booth this season.
In a statement released by the team, Barnett said: "I want to thank everyone for your kind sentiments and words of encouragement over the last couple of weeks. It has meant a lot to me during what has been a very difficult time. Effective immediately, for health reasons I will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from my broadcasting duties that I expect to last for the remainder of the season. I would ask that you please respect the privacy of me and my family during this time. Thank you once again for your support."
It was this exchange that prompted people to speculate if something was wrong. He said, "The go ahead run is at fifth on what Adams is insisting on calling a botched robbery."
The Rangers said that Steve Busby will stay in his role as the TV play-by-play voice, and that Matt Hicks will continue to work with Eric Nadel on radio.
Hopefully Dave's condition improves and he can return to work when he wants. Get well, sir.
