This
is not a call to can Dallas Cowboys special teams coach Joe DeCamillis. He is
in his fourth season with the Cowboys as its special teams guy, and in that
time he has had pretty good units. Mat McBriar was a good punter. Dan Bailey
was a good kicker last season. Etc.
Joe D’s unit on Sunday was a football tragedy, from Felix Jones’ fumbling the opening kickoff to the Chris Jones having his punt blocked and returned for a score.
The Cowboys trailed 10-0 in the first quarter, all on special teams.
It is all Joe D’s fault? No. Dan Connor whiffed on his assignment during the punt block. Kick returning has become increasingly irrelevant now that kicks are routinely sailing into the end zone; why even bring the ball out? Joe D needs to bag Felix on kick returns and send some other stiff out there with the explicit directions of “Son, just take a knee.”
The Reality: Joe D’s unit was awful on Sunday, as was Jason Garrett’s offense and Rob Ryan’s defense.

"Tragedy" is an under statement.
