The real Mongo, Alex Karras, was much more than a pawn in the game of life

This is a terribly sad story, but former former Detroit Lions defensive lineman Alex Karras, 77, is not well and only has a few days left, according to this report by the Detroit News.

UPDATE: CNN and other various outlets are reporting that Karras has died in L.A.

Most of us who don't recall his career with the Lions when he played in the '60s fondly know Karras' time as an actor, mostly on the TV show Webster, but primarily as the giant Mongo in the 1974 movie "Blazing Saddles".

Mongo like candy!

Here are two of Karras' most memorable scenes from that movie.
