This film already the runaway winner for Best Picture in 2012

215px-ZeroDarkThirty2012PosterEver since the SEAL Team Six completed the raid to kill Osama Bin Laden I have been a sucker for all the long-form stories and any background about this mission.

The book "No Easy Day" was written by an actual member of the SEAL team who completed the raid. Fascinating, and a very fast, read.

The book "Manhunt" by Peter Bergen is equally as compelling.

Have not had a chance to read this new book by Mark Bowden, "The Finish".

The National Geographic TV movie about the raid was just OK.

Big boy Hollywood is about to release its own version of this fascinating story with Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty", which is already cleaning up the awards from the big, stuffy critics. The National Board of Review named it the best movie of 2012.

The movie is scheduled for a limited release on Dec. 19, 2012. Click here for the movie's website.

How accurate will this movie be? Bigelow won an Academy Award for her movie "The Hurt Locker", which followed the story of a bomb disposal unit serving in Iraq, which had the feel of a real story.

The details on the manhunt for Bin Laden are fascinating and really require zero fictionalizing. The intelligence the U.S. had was not a slam dunk. The actual raid, with the exception of a helicopter crash (kind of a big deal), went very smooth.

Zero-Dark-Thirty-Jessica-ChastainThe most interesting character in this story is the female intelligence agent whose conviction was so strong that she sold a lot of people that the fuzzy picture in the satellite images was Bin Laden. In Zero Dark Thirty, she is played by Jessica Chastain.

You can bet Bigelow took some liberties to make this film, but hopefully not too many. This story does not require Hollywood makeup to make it interesting.
