Only a matter of blocks from one of the many prisons that are located in the underrated Huntstville is Mr. Hamburger. Click here for the Mr. Hamburger website.
If you are driving along Interstate 45 in Texas, this is a worthy stop ... if for no other reason than the menu, and the decor that celebrates the history of the prisons in Huntsville with giant replicated newspaper articles from back in the day.
One piece of decor featured an article about the old prison rodeo where the prisoners, with zero training, saddled up and gave it a ride. Needless to say, such fun no longer exists. Check out this photo - there was a lineup of Johnny Cash, Steve McQueen, Dale Robertson, etc.
I ordered the Texican - single meat, lettuce, guacamole, bacon and "Southwest" sauce. The pattie is flavorful, but the miss was the guac'. It tasted like a bit too much like it was out of a processed container. The fries were crisp and worthy of a double order.
This is not the World's Best Burger, but worthy of a visit.
