Family first: Earl Campbell should shut it

As a member of the disgusting media looking for content, it is with a deep sense of inner conflict to say Earl Campbell, please shut your mouth please. You aren't doing Mack Brown any favors. And he has done you plenty.

Earl-campbell-at-1The former Texas Longhorns running back and eternal UT icon with a bad back caused quite the regional, and national, stir on Sunday when he told Mark Berman of the Fox affiliate in Houston that the time has come for Mack to go. Click here for the original link.

Campbell said: "Nobody likes to get fired or leave a job, but things happen. I'd go on record and say 'yes I think it's time.'

"I'd just say this, I take my hat off for USC for what they've done (in firing Lane Kiffin late Saturday night/early Sunday morning). They didn't mess around with it. They just said 'let's do it now.'  I think at some point our university's people are going to have make a decision."

"Some people get too old. If players get too old to play a game, why can't a coach get too old to coach it."

This is where Campbell really lost me: He suggested friend Jerry Gray would be a good candidate to replace Mack.

Earl's voice has weight because he is Earl Campbell. That name will always mean something around Austin, and to every single Texas-Ex and Longhorn lover.

On the Big 12 coaches conference call this morning, Mack Brown does what Mack Brown do - handle these things deftly: "I’m disappointed in his comments but he’s entitled to his opinion," he said. "He’ll always be welcome at our school. Earl has done so much for Texas."

So has Mack.

ImagesDespite the fact a growing number of people agree with Earl, he should keep his mouth shut in regards to the hiring and firing of football coaches at his alma mater. Mack has done nothing put been supportive of Earl, for the obvious reasons, and he should return the favor by at least ostensibly standing by the man in what is looking like his final season.

Even though the new "controversial" content is appreciated, the wiser thing to say for Earl is to say you simply want what is best for the school and take the high road rather than look like just another short-memoried fan.

Earl is going to be Earl, but he is also UT family. There is no need to turn on Mack when these things will take care of themselves on the field.

SHUT UP BALLER! Earl was the man. A man has the right to speak his mind don't he. What did you ever do. Come down here and me an' my boys will esplain how this works. I don't agree with Big Earl but I give him respect and you should two.

Mac do you write your stories in crayon and then hire someone to edit?

The fact remains: UT football is hurting. The reality is that the only part of "coaching" that Mack could do is recruit well. He can't do that anymore. The only thing that will change things for the better is a new head coach. Mack has had plenty of time to turn things around. I applaud Earl for standing up and stating the obvious.

LHN...ha ha ha
