HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The great state a Texas' best chance of winning the national title died when Texas A&M lost against Alabama. Right now, only the mighty Aggies are ranked in the top 10. The other Texas teams that are ranked are Baylor (19) and Texas Tech (24).
For shame, doc'.
Don't rule out Division II West Texas A&M (3-0, ranked No. 4), or Division III Mary Hardin-Baylor (3-0, ranked No. 2).
Given its recent history, however, SHSU appears to have the best chance.
So Sam Houston State is in the Football Championship Subdivision - you know, the one that has the gall to use a playoff - but this program has become a national power in recent seasons under head coach Willie Fritz. The Bearkats have reached the FCS title game in each of the past two seasons, and are 31-6 since he arrived in 2010.
It tells you how hard it is to land a Division I gig when this guy can't get a look from an FBS school.
The Bearkats, ranked No. 4 in the latest Sports Network FCS College Poll, play a mas grande game on Saturday in Huntsville against No. 2 Eastern Washington. Officials are expecting a capacity crowd of 12,000.
If you are so inclined, keep an eye on SHSU senior running back Timothy Flanders. He is an All-American, and at 5-foot-9, 210 he will get a look from the NFL. He ran for 170 yards on 19 carries in the blowout loss at Texas A&M a few weeks ago.
The other guy who will get a look is former TCU linebacker Tanner Brock.
Under Fritz, the Bearkats have become a national name in FCS. It would also seem that, for this season, they are Texas' best chance at a national title.
