The football team in Texas that could win a national title

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The great state a Texas' best chance of winning the national title died when Texas A&M lost against Alabama. Right now, only the mighty Aggies are ranked in the top 10. The other Texas teams that are ranked are Baylor (19) and Texas Tech (24).

For shame, doc'.

1125937If we are going to celebrate a national football title in the sport of football our best chance comes from Huntsville, and the Sam Houston State University football team.

Don't rule out Division II West Texas A&M (3-0, ranked No. 4), or Division III Mary Hardin-Baylor (3-0, ranked No. 2).

Given its recent history, however, SHSU appears to have the best chance.

So Sam Houston State is in the Football Championship Subdivision - you know, the one that has the gall to use a playoff - but this program has become a national power in recent seasons under head coach Willie Fritz. The Bearkats have reached the FCS title game in each of the past two seasons, and are 31-6 since he arrived in 2010.

It tells you how hard it is to land a Division I gig when this guy can't get a look from an FBS school.

The Bearkats, ranked No. 4 in the latest Sports Network FCS College Poll, play a mas grande game on Saturday in Huntsville against No. 2 Eastern Washington. Officials are expecting a capacity crowd of 12,000.

If you are so inclined, keep an eye on SHSU senior running back Timothy Flanders. He is an All-American, and at 5-foot-9, 210 he will get a look from the NFL. He ran for 170 yards on 19 carries in the blowout loss at Texas A&M a few weeks ago.

The other guy who will get a look is former TCU linebacker Tanner Brock.

Under Fritz, the Bearkats have become a national name in FCS. It would also seem that, for this season, they are Texas' best chance at a national title.

Thanks for the recognition. Bearkat nation appreciates it!!

I'm a Bearkat alum, Class of '99, and I'm hoping we keep Coach Fritz around for a while. Thanks very much for your coverage of the Bearkats, raising their notoriety a little bit. As a Rockdale resident, I also admit a bit of pride in seeing nearby UMHB recognized for its excellence too. We've been especially proud of the Bearkats the past 2 years. I've gone to both National Championship games in Frisco. It's hard to describe the feeling of knowing your alma mater could be the best in the nation among its peers if they win. They came up short twice, but it was still a fantastic experience both times. Thanks again.

Bearkats #1

How can you not love this story!

Thank you for acknowledging the hard work and dedication of our Bearkats. I've been going to the games since the stands were empty and it sure is heartwarming to see them full, although I do miss my front door parking spot haha. Eat Em Up Kats!!

Bearkat Alum 2002, and thanks for the recognition. Went to the last two championship games in Frisco, and dang those ND Bison are tough to beat. Third times the charm! Bison burgers anyone? Eat em up Kats!

Navarro College is ranked #1 right now. They might have a shot.

Lester Leonard

As a former Navarro Bulldog and A SHSU Bearkat, i feels good to have these teams rank so high and its extra rewarding knowing i was a part of the emergence of both programs

Thank you so much for giving props to SHSU. AD Bobby Williams and Coach Fritz and staff have done an amazing job and brought so much to our school, both on and off the field. Hoping this can be the year they bring home a FCS championship.
Eat'em up KATS!

thanks for knowing about west texas a&m. they throw the ball around the lot like texas tech used to and are a lot of fun to watch. but you probably know that.

This team is a ton of fun to see in person. You should come and cover a game in person! Thanks for covering us. We deserve, and need, all the publicity we can get.

Proud of my Bearkats! Eat'em Up!!!

As a hard core follower of West Texas A&M football, I think this years West Texas Buffaloes would be Sam Houston State. WT has a great team and should be ranked higher than number 4 in D2.

West Texas A&M has more players in the NFL at this time than Sam Houston and has at least 3 seniors that will be in the NFL next year at this time.
The QB, a defensive end , a line backer.

Armand, keep to the topic...its not about who is going to, or could go to the's about the national title in college ball. SAM is a tough squad and Tim Flanders is making legit history...good job SHSU!
