CAPE NEDDICK, Maine - Each bite of the hot dog is like winning the lottery, only better. Located in Southern Maine is the universally famous Flo's Hot Dogs, which is a tiny little place where patrons have to duck to order, and eat outside not too far from the frigid waters of the North Atlantic.
Recently hit this famous locale on a family vacation and, if you are in the neighborhood, these steamed hot dogs are worth the drive in a region where delicious lobster is so plentiful it can often be found in a trash can.
Flo's has been open since the '50s, and it does not appear as if much as changed upon entering. The hot dogs are not grand, are placed on a white bun, and the selection is not some long, varied tricked-up menu. You order a few hot dogs, get some chips and a soda, and you are set with one of the better hot dog meals possible. Do yourself a favor and do NOT order the Moxie soda; it's a Maine thing, and it's a cross between Coca-Cola, and medicine ... only not as good.
The relish here is famous, and sweet. It is hard to beat the Special, which features mayo, homemade relish and some celery salt. You can buy the famous relish here.
This is a cash-only place, and the ambience of simplicity is awesome. Places like Flo's make traveling in America so great, and keep the hot dog thriving as a meal.
