IRVING, Texas - Nearly every single football player, football coach, football general manager, football analyst will all tell you the same thing - if you are going to win, you must win the turnover margin.
Shortly before Bill Parcells resigned as Cowboys head coach in 2007, he told quarterback Tony Romo: "You can't turnover the ball. You just can't do it."
Romo gets it. We all get it.
Which is why when examining the 2014 Dallas Cowboys, and a few other teams, the following doesn't make sense - the following NFL teams are minus in turnover margin:
NY Giants: -4
TB Bucs: -5
NY Jets: -11
Four of those teams have winning records:
Last season, the Dallas Cowboys were plus-eight in turnover margin and finished 8-8. When these turnovers matter, but it's hard to expect a team to have a great season negative in turnover ratio.
Regardless, no one from the Cowboys is kidding themselves - if this trend holds for the team the rest of the way, it will eventually burn them.
"As the games get later in the year and if you are lucky to be a team that's playing in January, turnovers are what ultimately decide your season," Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo told us media stars on Wednesday. "You can be the better team, but if you give up the ball you are not going to be able to accomplish your goals."
Spoken like Parcells.
