It seems like Dirk Nowitzki just can't see to get over the hump and get that first career triple double.
With eight assists tonight, Dirk was right there, but his teammates couldn't convert on two late three-point attempts that would have pushed him into 3-D territory.
In fact, Dirk has had a lot of near-misses on getting a triple double. He has had eight assists in one game nine times now, and each time he has also had double-digit rebounds and points.
In fact, Dirk's true career high in assists is actually 9, which he had on May 13, 2003 in game 4 of the second round of the playoffs against the Kings. He also had 16 points and 15 rebounds in the Mavericks victory.
A few quick number facts about Dirk's dimes:
- The Mavericks are 16-1 all-time when Dirk hands out at least 7 assists.
- When he hands out at least 7 assists, he averages 26.7 points and 11.7 rebounds.
- When he hands out at least 8 assists, he averages 26.2 points and 13.8 rebounds.
- As Jeff Caplan pointed out, Dirk is the Mavericks current assist leader with 5.14 per game. Jason Terry is second with 4.85 per game.
