On the surface, the Jason Kidd trade immediately smacked of sacrificing defense for offense. So far that's been the case.
Avery Johnson's take as of Monday morning:
"We've had to really take a hard look at our defense first of all. We can't give up 100-something points a game and be a good team. I thought we were slightly improved in some areas in the last game (against the Nets), looking at our technique and just getting everybody on the same page. Because if two men are thinking something different on defense, it confuses our whole defense. We think with more film study, with more practices, with more shootarounds, more games, we hope to get there and get our defense moving back in the right direction.
"Again, we've simplified some things, we've had to throw out some things in hopes we can get everybody on the same page."
