Ron Artest

In today's Dallas Mavericks article about free agency, I mentioned Ron Artest and how he might interest the Mavs because of his history playing for coach Rick Carlisle. I said that Artest had opted out of his contract with the Sacramento Kings which would make him an unrestricted free agent. This is not accurate. He has not opted out, at least not yet. At least one report suggests that Artest will opt out, although Artest has said he will remain with the Kings.

We'll soon find out.

Still at 51, but could be on the move

The Mavericks were never going to get into the top 10 or the lottery, but if they want to get in late in the first round, $3 million will probably do the trick...Just before the draft, Mavs president Donnie Nelson said they have a few "trigger points" staked out, meaning if a player they like slips into the mid- to late 20s, the Mavs will do what they can to deal.

No surprise: Kidd on Olympic team

Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd was named to the 12-member U.S. Olympic basketball team Monday. He is 44-0 in international play and will be relied up on for his veteran leadership.

“It is a great honor on behalf of the Dallas Mavericks to represent my country in the 2008 Olympic Games," Kidd said in a statement. "I look forward to the challenge of winning a gold medal.”

The team was selected without a tryout. It will have a minicamp this week in Las Vegas and meet there July 20-25 to train and play an exhibition against Canada before heading overseas. The Americans open Olympic play against China on Aug. 10.
